With
the October half term just around the corner, you may already be planning some
fun, family-friendly things to do with the kids.
But
the weather can be unpredictable at the best of times – especially in autumn,
when crisp, still mornings can be followed by an afternoon downpour. So it’s a
good idea to have some rainy day activities up your sleeve!
Whether
you need some ideas for half term or for this weekend, these should provide
some inspiration...
Visit
a National Trust property
The
National Trust owns hundreds of historic buildings across the UK and they’re
the perfect places to explore whatever the weather. In fact, the National Trust
hosts year-round family events, from treasure hunts to storytelling sessions –
take a look at what’s on near you on their dedicated rainy day page.
Explore
cave systems
Are
you a family of adventure-seekers? If so, how does exploring a vast,
subterranean world sound? Caving is a fantastic all-weather activity; get
suited and booted with one of our powerful head torches before venturing deep down underground to navigate
a fascinating cave system formed millions of years ago. It’s physically
demanding but incredibly rewarding, and will be an experience you will never
forget. Take a look at the kind of tours you can do here.
Scale
a climbing wall
An
afternoon spent scaling a climbing wall is fun for all the family, not to
mention great exercise! There are indoor centres up and down the country, many
of which cater for beginners. No doubt you’ll want to take some proud-parent
pics of your kids reaching the top, so make sure your phone stays charged with
a GP PowerBank.
Get
bouncing
Trampoline
parks are popping up all over the place and provide endless hours of fun for
small and big kids! As well as being huge, spring-loaded playgrounds,
many parks have things like monkey bars, crash pillows, dodgeball, basketball
and gladiator-style obstacle courses. The perfect rainy day activity!
Step
into the future
Walk
on the moon, control your own submarine, fly through the air, fight your
enemies on another planet...the possibilities of virtual reality (VR) seem
endless. VR centres are your chance to go on an exciting, fully-immersive
journey that pushes the boundaries of human experience – your kids will love
it, and so will you!
Splash
around
Check
out your local swimming pool – it might have kids’ inflatables at set times
during the half term. If you want to join in the fun, you could always head to
an indoor waterpark near you, which are great
fun for little and big kids alike.
Watch
a show
Catching
a performance at your local theatre is a great alternative to watching a film
at the cinema and is likely to be far more memorable for your kids. If they
feel inspired after the show, ask about kids’ drama classes, which will be
another rainy day activity sorted!
If you’ve got any
suggestions for rainy day activities, we’d love to hear them! Share them with
us (and fellow parents) on our Facebook page.
