Top 10 UK summer picnic spots – as voted for by YOU!

We know we’re not the only ones who love a good ol’ picnic. There’s something hugely humbling about unravelling a tartan rug in the great outdoors, and sharing food and laughter with our friends and family.

In fact, we know we’re not the only ones who enjoy picnicking as a popular pastime, because we asked you to share your favourite summer UK picnic spots with us – and almost 800 of you replied on our Facebook page alone! Thank you!

As much as we’d love to, we can’t share all of your suggestions, but you can browse the list for yourself and see what takes your fancy. Here are 10 of the best summertime picnic spots that caught our attention – wicker hampers at the ready…

1. Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway is an iconic, UNESCO World Heritage Site – and according to you guys, it’s also a great place to enjoy lunch! On a still day, picnickers can tuck into a sarnie perched on one of the 40,000 basalt columns , but if it’s gusty, you might want to soak up the bird’s eye views from the less-exposed coastal path.

2. Mallards Pike Lake, Forest of Dean

Sip on summer punch whilst watching for wildlife on the edge of Mallards Pike Lake, nestled in the heart of the picturesque Forest of Dean. The forest is renowned for its walking and cycling trails, so you can work up an appetite before rewarding yourself with some grub!

3. Hubbard’s Hills, Louth

If you’re picnicking with your pooch, head to Hubbard’s Hills, an area of natural beauty just west of Louth in Lincolnshire. There are designated picnic areas, as well as a number of streams perfect for your dog to paddle in.

4. Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Dine al fresco in the grounds of Alnwick Castle and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back in time. It’s one of England’s biggest inhabited castles, currently home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, visit on a day you can take part in broomstick training (no, seriously!).

5. Margam Country Park, Port Talbot, Wales

With around 850 acres to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find your perfect picnic spot in Margam Country Park. Maybe you’ll set up camp near the Grade-I-listed mansion, in the blooming gardens which surround it, or close (but not too close) to the famous Margan deer herd which graze the grounds.

6. Loch Doon, Carrick, Scotland

Scotland is famed for its awe-inspiring lochs, one of which is the freshwater Loch Doon. The glittering waters are encased by green, rolling hills, and it’s not unusual  to spot ospreys soaring above. These birds aren’t the only things lighting up the skies, though – if you can make it a weekend trip, the loch is the perfect place for stargazing.

7. Tenby South beach, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Stretching two miles and backed by seemingly endless dunes, the golden sands of Tenby South beach are hugely popular with swimmers, sunbathers and picnickers alike. As an alternative to your usual picnic, we suggest enjoying a bag of fish and chips whilst watching the waves crashing on the shore (just watch out for the gulls).

8. Spitchwick, Dartmoor National Park

On a hot summer’s day, launching yourself into a river is a great way to cool down – and that’s exactly what you can do in Spitchwick, which just happens to be a great place for picnics too! The water is from the mountains, meaning it’s clear and fresh, but wild swimming has its risks, so make sure you’re sensible and take the necessary steps to stay safe.

9. Regent’s Park, London

You can still find peace and tranquility in the city, as Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill prove! On sunny evenings and at weekends, the park is full of friends and families sharing picnics and playing ball games. Primrose Hill’s views across the capital’s cityscape are hard to beat.

10. Devil’s Dyke, Sussex

Not as scary as it sounds, Devil’s Dyke is a giant, V-shaped valley located in the South Downs Way in southern England. It’s a popular place to visit, with the surrounding countryside great for a pre- or post-picnic stroll. Feel the fresh breeze in your hair, and listen out for the skylarks singing their song as they soar through the air.
